At our school assembly this morning, I learned that April is national poetry month. This is not something I would normally think much of, but after our school librarian read a poem to us this morning, I became a bit more interested in the idea. The librarian, a friend of mine, was talking about how five years ago today; she gave birth to her twin girls, both eight pounds by the way; that’s a lot of baby! Anyway, she read us a poem that I loved as a child, explaining to us that she would be reading it to her daughter's tonight. After her reading, I started thinking about how much I loved all kinds of poetry as a kid. These days, the only so called poetry I read is sent to me in a stupid email forward, next to a picture of a waterfall, or some other “inspiring” photograph. So, I have decided to post a few poems this month that capture my mood at the time. I am hoping this will help me to express some of the feelings going through me about moving back to VA, and starting the next phase of my life as a soon to be thirty-year-old. So I will start with the poem from this morning, by Shell Silverstein.
"Listen to the MUSTN'TS, child,
Listen to the DON'TS
Listen to the SHOULDN'TS
The IMPOSSIBLES, the WON'TS
Listen to the NEVER HAVES Then listen close to me-- Anything can happen, child, ANYTHING can be."
